Heads are swimming about this stuff.
Senator Orrin Hatch sponsors a bill, the Songwriter Equity Act, in 2015, and it goes nowhere (at least so far, and the outlook is not good). ASCAP puts together a fine video,”Stand With Songwriters,” but perhaps it didn’t catch fire or go viral near enough.
And there’s the video from a couple years ago, presented by the Dramatists Guild of America, “Someone Wrote That Song,” [which is a solid song, itself, by Alan Menken and Craig Carnelia], directed, perhaps, to the kids who are growing up with “music is free” and seeing nothing problematic with “free.” The video has been watched almost 11,000 times, in 2.5 years. [that’s sarcasm here, folks]
And there’s the “Open Letter from Songwriters: Dear American Music Publishing Community: Let’s Talk” from several months back.
And there’s a blog post by the incomparable Zoë Keating, from several months back, entitled “What should I do about Youtube?”
Could it be that our technology is seriously screwing up music? I think so.
I do blame the major label record companies, for not getting in the digital game earlier. At least they are (soon to be, “were”) music companies. NONE of the digital song streamers, sellers, and video purveyors are music companies–they are technology companies. The content, meaning, hope, and salvation of songs is nothing more than fodder–the cotton candy they give their “customers” to encourage them to:
- buy a new, better, physical toy;
- click on this annoying ad off to the right side of the screen (or right in the middle of the screen); or
- “subscribe” at a periodic rate (a model that has worked out so well for newspapers).

It probably won’t be a single artist who will be able to succeed against the technology companies, it probably will not be a governmental policy or non-profit get-together who beats back the technology companies, and it probably won’t even be music “consumers” who succeed in honoring music in the future such that music remains vital (cotton-candy lovers that they are).
Perhaps a new kind of for-profit music company will arise that cares about music, for music’s sake. There’s always hope (so says music, huh?).
